Growing Through Trials

No one naturally welcomes hardship. When difficulties arise, our first instinct is often to ask, "Why is this happening?" While that question is understandable, Scripture gently redirects our attention toward another question: "What is God accomplishing through this?" James offers one of the most surprising commands in the New Testament: "Count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations." He is not encouraging us to celebrate pain itself. Rather, he invites us to rejoice in what God is producing through our trials. Patience. Endurance. Maturity. A deeper dependence upon Him. Job understood this reality in ways few others have. Though stripped of nearly everything he held dear, he continued seeking God. At one point he declared, "When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Job did not understand every reason for his suffering, but he trusted the character of the God who remained sovereign over it. The Way of Quiet Light teaches that seasons of hardship often become seasons of deepest growth. Storms drive the roots of great trees deeper into the earth. Likewise, trials often deepen our faith, strengthen our character, and loosen our grip upon temporary things. This does not mean suffering is easy. God never asks us to deny grief or pretend that pain is pleasant. Jesus Himself wept. Yet even in sorrow, we are invited to trust that our Heavenly Father is accomplishing purposes far greater than we can presently see. If you are walking through a difficult season, remember that God's silence is not His absence. He is present even when His work remains hidden from view. One day you may look back and discover that the season you would never have chosen became the season in which God drew you closest to Himself. Trust Him. The Refiner never wastes the fire.
